English goes out for a walk...
After becoming the number one spoken language in Britain, the English language decided to stretch it's legs and go travelling.
With explorers like Christopher Columbus, and Captain Cook rife, the spread of the English language was inevitable. Now while with the exploration of the world and spread of English, English has a bad, or rather constant habit, of borrowing copying and stealing words, dialects and indeed continents. English has many methods of acquiring new words:
English Borrowed heavily form all the nations and countries it visited Taking from the carribean islands: Cannibal Canoe Barbecue From India: Yoga Cummerbund (corset) Crimson Bungalow Africa: Voodoo Zombie And a whole slough of other words that we take for granted today. Wherever the English language went it left some remnant or dialect behind, creating all sorts of English types today, like Australian English and American English. From american English came a new level of commercial language, phrases like 'break even', 'parking lot' and 'subway' were coined to give new meaning to the ever evolving way of life. Americans even use some outdated English words like, 'candy', and 'faucet', where as back over in England, they moved to words like, 'sweets' and 'tap'. Adding to the ever growing contrast which was the English language. |
